Jupiter SUP Sprint Race - A Winning Success!
On Saturday April 17, a group of dedicated Stand Up Paddleboard racers and one prone paddler made the 1st Jupiter "Walk on Water" SUP Sprint Race a winning success. The conditions were not your typical sunny Florida morning. The winds were blowing from the South East at 13 to 17 knots and the tide was coming in. The water start off the floating dock at Blowing Rocks Marina had the racers paddling into the wind and against the current for a grueling first 2 miles of the 4 mile course. The turnaround buoy was located off of Coral Cove and with the wind at their backs and paddling with the current, the race was on!
Packett Casey came in first place with a time of 46:24, Jake Portwood was 2nd with 47:05, Jeff Webber was 3rd at 52:02, Frank Dillenberg was 4th overall and 1st in the Masters class at 52:44, John Denney, owner of Jupiter PaddleBoarding on a new 2010 YOLO, was 5th (2nd Masters) at 55:33 edging out the women’s winner, Mary Anne Boyer -Willis with a time of 55:47. The lone prone paddler of the group, Janet Sikora Amendola finished the race at 1hour 21minutes.
The event was held at Blowing Rocks Marina in Tequesta on the ICW as part of the Jupiter StandUp Paddle Surf Eco Tour, sponsored by Florida Surf Lessons with boards provided by JupiterPadldleboarding.com and SoFlo. The Surf Eco tour introduced Stand Up Paddle boarding to many people who had never tried Stand Up Paddle Boarding before. With boat escorts and 2 jet-ski , the Eco Tour Paddlers got some help if they needed it going into the wind as the tour ended at Tiki 52 at Blowing Rocks Marina for a fun party with music by Southern Vine and food by Gourmet at the Rocks. Everyone was stoked and Proceeds from the day benefited the Red Cross Haitian Disaster Relief program. Thank you to everyone that came out to show their support at Blowing Rocks Marina! Special thanks to Jimmy Lewis, Florida Surf Lessons, and SoFlo boards. It was a great race and a great intro to SUP paddle! We look forward to seeing everyone out on the water!
